Noelle Drewes, Oboist - Performer, Teacher, and Repair Specialist

Noelle Drewes is an acclaimed professional oboist and repair technician. Her ever growing list of oboe repair clients include members of the National Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Kennedy Center Opera Orchestra, and the US Premier Military Bands, as well as professionals, students, and hobbyists throughout the region, and the United States. For a decade she was an apprentice at Lee Lachman’s Woodwind Services, in College Park, Md., learning to repair all of the instruments in the woodwind family. In 2020, she opened her own oboe-specific repair shop. Noelle’s Oboe Workshop is located in Bowie, Maryland--in between DC, Baltimore, and Annapolis.

Regularly sought out around the country for her expertise, Noelle has given master classes on performance, adjustment & repair at The Ohio State University, the University of Delaware, and the University of Maryland.

As a performer, Noelle has appeared extensively as a substitute with the National Symphony Orchestra and NSO Pops on both second oboe and English horn, including performances at the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, and Union Station, as well as on national broadcast television from the U.S. Capitol. Noelle has shared the stage with such eclectic artists as Gianandrea Noseda, Christoph Eschenbach, Leonard Slatkin, Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles, Renee Fleming, Joshua Bell, Hansen, Paquito D'Rivera, George Takei, and Misty Copeland, among others.

She has performed in shows at the Tony Award winning Signature Theatre, on tour with the United States Air Force Band, and with Grammy Award winning Mannheim Steamroller. She has performed in concerts with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Symphony, and National Philharmonic, as well as the Annapolis, Fairfax, Maryland, and Charlottesville Symphony Orchestras. In 2023, she was a featured soloist with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra performing Viet Cuong’s Extra(ordinarily) Fancy. Noelle has additionally performed with the orchestras of the Wolf Trap Opera Company, Washington Concert Opera, Maryland Lyric Opera, Opera Camerata of Washington, the Washington Chorus, Choral Arts Society of Washington, and the Washington National Cathedral Choral Society.

Noelle plays principal oboe with the Apollo Orchestra, the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, and the Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra. She plays second oboe/English horn with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra and the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra.

From 2020-2024, Noelle served as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College, teaching oboe and performing as a resident artist member of the Sunderman Wind Quintet.

Featured as a guest on the podcast "Not Your Average Musician", Noelle discussed her oboe repair story and staying motivated during the pandemic by launching her @noelle_oboe instagram page.

An Ohio native, Noelle grew up playing in the Columbus Youth Symphony, All-State Orchestra, and the Chamber Music Connection. Noelle received her Bachelor of Music degree in oboe performance from the Ithaca College School of Music, including a semester of study at the Royal College of Music in London, England. She attended the University of Maryland for graduate school, earning both Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. Noelle has spent summers at the Pierre Monteux School, Brevard Music Center, Eastern Music Festival, and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Her teachers include Nicholas Stovall, Jane Marvine, Mark Hill, Paige Morgan, Robyn Dixon-Costa, and John Anderson.

When not working, Noelle is usually outside and/or reading a book.
